Here’s an easy and fun tutorial to upcycle and repurpose those coffee cans.  If you’re like me, you always need containers.  I use tons of paint brushes and I try to keep the brushes for various mediums separate.  This is a little tutorial for taking a metal coffee can and transforming it into a functional piece of art!

I first primed the outside with gesso, just to give the paint something to hang on to.

Use some Mod Podge to adhere some torn book pages. You can also use some scrapbooking paper, handpainted paper or even magazine pages.

Next, start adding some paint. Use whatever colors make you happy. You don’t need to paint the entire can. I painted some areas and left some areas of my book pages.

Add some pretty stenciling.  To create the pink butterfly, I mixed some pink paint with some modeling paste (joint compound works also) and then scraped it over a butterfly stencil. You can also see in this pic where I painted some red on a small piece of bubble wrap and used it as a stamp. Love bubble wrap!

On this one, I also painted some tiny pink roses. The possibilities are endless. Just use your imagination and paint whatever makes you happy. If you don’t feel comfortable with the painting, use some Mod Podge to add some pretty wallpaper pieces or even wrapping pager.

And there you have your pretty container!

  1. I love this! I used to decorate cans when my boys were little for all their stuff. This brought back some memories.
